Store More Solar Energy with NSW’s Battery Installation Scheme

Do you have a solar energy system at home and are looking to store all that extra power?

Good news, New South Wales is making it easier and more affordable! The NSW Climate and Energy Action sector is encouraging an initiative under its Peak Demand Reduction Scheme, enabling homeowners and small businesses to install battery storage alongside their solar systems. This not only supports the community’s shift to renewable energy but also helps NSW reach its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.

What’s the Offer?

This scheme provides a discount on battery installations for properties that already have solar panels. And if you’re still considering making the switch to solar, NSW also offers a bundled discount when installing both solar panels and a battery at the same time. This gives locals a chance to increase their home’s value while reducing energy costs. By lowering the upfront barrier, the scheme helps more homeowners and businesses take the leap into renewable energy.

Why Does It Matter?

New South Wales is aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050, cutting reliance on fossil fuels especially during peak energy demand. This initiative helps the community contribute to that goal by making battery storage more accessible. The scheme also reduces pressure on the electricity grid, minimizing the risk of blackouts while allowing households to be more energy independent.

Who Can Access It?

Households and businesses without pre-installed batteries are eligible, but that doesn’t mean those who already have them are left out. If you already own battery storage, you may qualify for an alternative incentive under the Virtual Power Plant (VPP) program. This allows you to sell excess stored energy back to the grid when demand spikes, another way to make the most of your renewable energy setup while benefiting the community.

How Does It Work?

This isn’t a rebate, instead the discount is built directly into the installation price and provided by an Accredited Certificate Provider (ACP). These installers voluntarily participate in the scheme, generating energy savings certificates that they can sell to meet industry obligations. The best part, the bigger the battery (in kWh), the greater the savings. The size of your battery determines your discount, so don’t be afraid of getting more storage.  To get the best deal, the NSW government recommends comparing multiple quotes from accredited installers before making a decision. This way, you can make an informed choice and maximize your savings.

Switching to battery storage has never been easier, or more rewarding!

Whether you’re looking to cut down on energy bills, boost your home’s value, or do your part for a greener future, this scheme gives you the perfect jumpstart. So why not take advantage of the discount, store more solar power, and keep your lights on even when the grid’s feeling the heat? Your future self will thank you!
